There are many ways to reach New Abbey the main route is via the M74
Whether travelling North or South use this route
if travelling from the south, on the M6 from Birmingham or Manchester then the M74 just north of Carlisle
Turn off at Gretna at Junction 22, take the A75 east to Dumfries. This last part of the journey takes about half-an-hour
from Dumfries take the A756 cross the River Nith by St Michaels Bridge
at the T junction turn left on A710 to New Abbey

THE WALK
This Walk is 3.5 miles
Conditions mainly lanes with moderate climbs with one steep woodland section
descent slippery when wet
Refreshments/ Toilets in village
START turn right out of the abbey car park, pass the corner cafe and walk along the road through the village of New Abbey
there is a Lime tree with a seat round it in the Village Square, turn left onto the side road just beyond the abbey arms
50mts on turn left up a surfaced drive, signed ]Waterloo Monument cross the Bridge that carries water from the Corn Mill
the mill pond is on the right continue along the narrow road winding uphill as the road becomes straighter and descends
Waterloo Monument is ahead on the right and the summit of Criffel is on the the left
just past a lane and a white building on the the right and just before the footbridge over glen burn
fork right sign to monument cross a stile beside a gate follow the stream for about 200mts
follow the path uphill cross another stile and continue to the monument
continue past the monument now signed New Abbey the path descends through woodland
bends left then right to follow a ridge go through a gap in the wall then right through woodland to a lane
turn right along lane continue for half mile through a sawmill and back to the village
just past a Medieval farm house and old parish hall turn left onto road at the pond turn left
over New Abbey bridge about half mile beyond the village pass the museum of costume
take the first right past Shambellie Grange follow lane uphill, where the main road goes sharp left you continue straight on
a no through road sign to Landis farm at the farm turn right down a lane ignore the path to abbey tower
at bottom of hill pass the farm track on left continue to river new abbey pow
cross the footbridge next to the ford follow path bearing right go through the small wooden gate
onto track after 20mts go through another gate continue on grassy path with a hedge on the left
back
to the abbey climb the steps back to the car park
