Its
Brilliant
A great walk kids will love it, we are kids at heart and we loved it,
allow plenty time for the walk as there is so much to see and do,
beachcombing looking for long lost pirates treasure, collecting fossils,
shells galore, driftwood, flotsom & jetsom, write your name in the sand
take your binoculars, watch the ships, spot dolphins at play, watch the birds,
this is an up & down adventure on undulating coastal paths, with a gem of
a village To
explore at either end.
(ps if 9 miles is to far,do half of the walk and get the bus back)
**Directions**
from Ravenscar to Robin Hood's Bay & back
This dramatic and attractive section of the Yorkshire Coast has attracted visitors
long before the North York Moors National Park was thought of.
The walk’s outward route follows a section of the Cleveland Way National Trail
which returns over the disused railway that once ran from Whitby to Scarborough.
Nowhere is the route particularly tough, but there are some ups and downs on the coastal
section and the return along the railway is a steady climb. One of the delights of this walk
is that it avoids the problems of having to park in Robin Hood’s Bays narrow streets,
In addition
you can arrange the walk so that you arrive in Robin Hood’s Bay at lunch
time.

Start in Ravenscar (Grid ref. NZ979015) close by the Public Toilets and the National Trust
Information Centre. (well signposted all the way)
After parking you immediately get an idea of the walk ahead, with most of the route visible from the start.
Walk along the road towards the National Trust Centre. Turn left along the signed Cleveland Way.
This follows the abandoned railway for a short way before a fingerpost indicates
the Cleveland Way leaves the old railway and begins to descend right.

DISABLED RAMBLERS MUST STAY ON THE ABANDONED RAILWAY LINE |
(cont) Waymarking is first class and there are no problems finding your way.
Descending to the left of the golf course the path passes the remains of the old Alum Works
this is a good place to take some time to soak up the history of a bygone age,
on this spot mad KING GEORGE is portrayed in the film "The Madness of King George was treated,
smugglers,cannons, pirates,revenue troops,secret tunnels,and urine by the boat load
the Rev Francis Willis lost his house in a bet against 2 wood lice racing across a plate,
you have only walked a few hundred metres, (to read more on these stories) click here
keeping to the cliff top, good progress is made on the next level section.
reaching a track at stoupe brow the path descends and crosses stoupe beck
before climbing up and following the cliff top once more. A steep stepped path into
and out of the valley at boggle hole (grid ref NZ954040) leads once more to a level section,
which takes you all the way to the slipway at Robin Hood’s Bay.

if you are on the beach be careful as the tide comes in fast and the sea cuts off access to the main slipway.
but there are steps up further along the beach and a few other escape routes
the village of Robin Hood’s Bay is worth exploring. the main streets have all the usual seaside Shops Pubs etc
away from this there are lots of interesting narrow lanes that provide a glimpse into the past
and gives a better idea of what the village looked like before Tourists took over
Having explored the village, climb up the steep main street and turn left into thorpe lane.
continue along this road for approximately 400 metres. reaching the old railway (grid ref. NZ946052),
turn left and follow this multi-purpose cycleway, footpath and bridleway south to Ravenscar.
no further instructions are necessary as the way ahead is clear and not in doubt.
generally there is a steady climb towards Ravenscar and, if you are in the mood,
you can get some valuable aerobic exercise if you lift the pace.
allow 4-6 hours depending on how many times you stop to
soak up the history the beauty & romance thats all around,
