The
Isle Of Wight is only 22.5 miles X 13.5 miles
an
all
season walkers paradise with over 500
miles of well maintained footpaths
winding
through fields and forests.
Some
64
miles follow the spectacular coastline,
nearly half of which is classed as 'Heritage
Coast'
and
more than fifty percent is designated as an area of outstanding natural
beauty.
The
Island is also home to the UK's largest
annual Walking Festival

From
the Nature reserve hide you can see the only regular colony of Sand
Martins on the Island
other
Birds include Blackcaps,Garden
Warblers,Chiffchaffs &
Willow Warblers
From
the top of Brading
Down there are Panoramic views over the
whole of the East Side
of
the Island,the Solent &
Spithead,
The Isle of Wight Steam Railway runs from Havenstreet West to Wootton & East to Ryde the railway crosses the trail near Smallbrook,there is a Station at Smallbrook Junction,
There is a Good selection of Pubs,& Restaurants& Cafes on Sandown & Ryde Seafronts,

The
Island is well served by an excellent Bus
and Rail Service
This
Walk Starts at the rear of Sandown
Railway Station,
there
is parking there if you come by car
then
you can get the Bus or Train back after your Walk
which
finishes at Ryde Bus &
Rail Station

Forests,Fields,Over Styles,It Is Well Signposted
However
The Terrain May Not Suit All Abilities
Start
from Sandown Railway Station,
leave
the station on the south side and turn Right out of the station courtyard
down
the hill and go through the underpass,then
take the footpath signed Adgestone,
continue
through the Sandown High School
playing fields,
pass
left of the Water Works then along the bridleway(SS47)
keeping
the Golf Course on your left,
After
leaving the Golf Course continue
along the path over the bridge,
through
the 5 bar gate and continue straight ahead to another gate,
Continue
along the well defined Bridleway,which
turns sharp right but
follows
a semi circular pattern on your left,
ignore
the signed path to Adgestone and do not cross
the stream
continue
to the footpath marked NC17 Alverstone,
Follow
this path through the woods to the gate passing the Nature Reserve Bird
Hide
on
the right,bear left to the style,continue to the second style then over
the boardwalk
to
the style leading to the road,
turn
right walk along the road,over Alverstone
Bridge and through the village,
Continue
north for about 100 mts
where the road through the village turns sharp right,
leave
the road at this point proceeding straight ahead up the lane which becomes
a
bridleway after passing 2 houses,
This
path climbs gradually,then
steeply up to the top of Brading Down to
meet
the
Newport to Brading road (TAKE CARE CROSSING THE ROAD) >>CONT>>

right along this road for 500mts before
passing through a gate on the left,
follow
the track (B30) through
the field gate keeping to the left of the fence,
Continue
over the rise then downhill and bear right to another gate,
Turn
left through the gate and continue with the wood on your right to join
the road
at
Nunwell
West Lodge,Nunwell House is on
the right,
Turn
left along the road past Nunwell Farm
to the road junction then left at the fork
onto
Harding
Shute after a few metres,Continue along this
road,for about 400mts
turn
left just past the farm pond at Hardingshute
Farm and follow farm track
with
the hedge on your right to the corner of the copse,
Go
through the gate keeping the hedge on your right and proceed to another
gate,
go
through and turn left, Keep the woodland on
your left and proceed to the gate
in
the corner of the field to Whitefield Farm,
Pass
through another farm gate and turn right to walk between building
& stockyard,
through
another gate out of the Farm,then
along the farm track,bearing slightly right
and
sharp left around the field boundary to the crossing of steam
railway,
after
crossing the railway (with great care) follow
the bridleway to join Ashley Road,
Turn
right and follow the road for aprox 150mts and turn right into Smallbrook
Stadium,
Follow
the footpath (R50)
that runs behind the stadium and along the edge of the
Council
Yard,turning right onto Smallbrook Lane
After
passing over the railway bridge take the path on the left beside the railway
track
(taking
care especially with small children) continue until the built up area is
reached
Bear
right immediately past Oakfield Football Ground,then
left into Oakfield High Street,
turn
right into St Johns and
left down St Johns Hill to
St
Johns Railway Station
where
the trail ends at the Hole in the Wall Pub
with
Family beer Garden
for
a well deserved Shandy,
The
walk can be continued into the centre of Ryde
by turning right over the bridge into Monkton
Street,
continue
down the hill 800mts turn left into East Street,
continue until you reach Dover Street,
turn
right and cross over the Esplanade to
the Sea front where you can find
the
Bus
&
Railway Stations
for your connections around the island,
