The Hermitage has a small cave a few hundred metres in from the car park that used to be

inhabited by Ossian the Hermit.some sceptics say its a folly, but they are just non believers

Ossian's Cave

This is not so much a cave as a group of large rocks with a cleverly constructed stone roof

the semi mythical poet Ossian is supposed to have lived and written his heroic verse here

around the 3rd century

LONGER WALKS

INCHEWAN WALK

orange markers 7 miles

BRANN WALK

green markers 5 miles

from the Hermitage car park

walk under the railway bridge on either of the two paths

and follow the riverside to a delightful stone bridge and Victorian folly known

as Ossian's Hall overlooking the waterfall

At this point  Turn Left  cross the bridge and follow the path now heading back along

the river you will see the car park on the opposite side, lookout for the sign indicating

one of britains tallest trees, continue on until you arrive at Inver car park

( now this is  VERY VERY  important and where lots of people take the wrong turning )

when you go through the gate into inver car park

you must  Turn Right  and go up the 10 steps onto the road turn right and walk

up this quiet road a few metres to the path on the left at the

black and yellow pole

follow this rough path a short way uphill until you come to another road cross carefully

this is the main entrance to

Ladywell Forest

and the gateway to some great forest walks

Go through the opening to the right of the big metal gate never obstruct this entrance

this is a working forest, always observe   the countryside access code >

walk on uphill about 1 mile until you reach the first junction

" The Brann Walk "

goes  RIGHT at this junction

follow the Green Signs this is the shorter of the 2 walks it is a circular walk

and runs together with the orange walk in 2 or 3 places it is a great forest walk

with a good chance of spotting wildlife

Deer, Fox, Squirrels, Rabbit, Hare, Frogs, Osprey, Capercaille, Pine Marten, etc

always stay on the marked routes or you may get lost this is a large forest

.

" The Inchewan Walk "

goes Straight on at this junction

follow the  Orange Signs  this is the longer of the 2 walks it is also circular walk

after about 1 mile there is a low wooden signpost pointing 3 ways it points to Tomgarrow

Inver ( where you have just come from ) and Birnam Glen ( you will come out here on your way back )

take the Tomgarrow Path this is a quiet peaceful part of the forest with many wild flowers

amongst the trees, sorrel, corn spurrey, red campion, st johns wart, cuckoo flower, honeysuckle

to name but a few, fruits of the forest, blaeberry, raspberry, bramble etc

this is also where we spotted many frogs

follow this path until you come to another low wooden signpost take the left path signed Inchewan

you will soon go through a wooden gate and over a wooden bridge ( picture above ) coming to a house

in the middle of nowhere ( sorry)  the forest

you pass by the front of the house ( picture above ) the path takes you round to the front gate

then away down the track, you should lookout for the ruins of a deserted village

which was once inhabited by slate miners, ( picture above )

continue on over a large style you will pass an old caravan ( picture above ) then a large house on the right

continue till you come to a Tee junction, Turn Left

and continue on a wide farm track for about 1 mile just before the farm

is a style on the left cross here and continue half mile to the next gate there is a

style next to the gate,( use either )

you re - enter the forest here, the path goes right follow round you will

pass a large clearing on the right going downhill keep a lookout for another

low wooden signpost, you want to turn Left here signed Invergo a short way and

over a bridge through a wooden gate this path only goes a short distance to a

Tee junction turn Left and you are back at the very first low wooden signpost

you have just emerged from the beautiful Birnam Glen, turn Right signed Inver

you are now retracing your steps to the main entrance of Ladywell Forest

carefully cross the road down the rough path opposite to the next

quiet road turn right go down the 10 steps into Inver car park

go through the gate on the far left for the path back to

the Hermitage car park

the  Inchewan walk should take about 3 hours at a moderate pace

the Brann Walk a bit less depending on how many times you stop

Dont forget your Camera

todays pictures are tomorrows memories

take something to drink

a towel to dry your feet

we always stick them in the river Brann to cool down

Deep in Ladywell Forest
4 miles into the forest

For Disabled Or Less Adgile Ramblers

the path up to the Hermitage Folly and Cave is very pleasant and reasonably level

the path beyond here is uneven and may not be suitable for

disabled and less adgile ramblers, ( see large photo above )

Disabed Drivers ONLY Can Take their cars up to Ossians Folly by driving under the

RIGHT ARCH at the Hermitage car park

However if you prefer a longer walk instead of parking at the hermitage

park at the entrance to Ladywell Forest

do not obstruct this entrance as this is a working forest

Directions

if you are heading north away from Perth take the LEFT turn before the Hermitage signed Inver Mill

if you are heading south going towards Perth turn right after the Hermitage signed Inver Mill

turn in and follow the **MAIN ROAD** round until you see the entrance to Ladywell Forest on your LEFT

from this point there are better Forest Tracks and will suit

most abilities it can be Steep and Muddy in places

if you want to park at the INVER CAR PARK turn in at the Inver Mill Sign then take

the first RIGHT pass the   Inver Mill Caravan Site  >   and  KEEP LEFT

uphill about 50 metres to the car park on the right
