Whether travelling north or south using this route, leave the M74 motorway at Junction 15
and follow the A701 to Moffat

near the car park is a splendid waterfall accessed by a path alongside the burn
this is often mistaken for the Grey Mare’s Tail but is in fact the Buck Loup
leave the car park and cross over the bridge
immediately turning left up the path alongside the burn
up the hill track and the Grey Mare's Tail is on your left
follow tail burn for a mile to reach Loch Skeen 175160
this is often far enough for the casual walker
if you are feeling a bit more ambitious
skirt the loch on right bank halfway along lochside, bear right
over wet heather to fence 175165
the fence soon becomes a wall on your right for four miles until it returns to the Tail Burn
go uphill from Loch Skeen, at first over peat bog, then steep climb on grass
In .75 mile turn left 171176 continue for .75 mile west south west
to left turn on firthybrig head 158172 one mile south south west by Donald's Cleuch Head
to firthhope rig 153154 the main wall continues 50 yards the little cairn just beyond
turn left along wall fallen to ground level
Follow east for a mile to steep stony slope of Rough Craigs 171152
Descend carefully, At foot, wall goes away to right keep ahead east to ford Tail Burn
turn right to return to car park
