This
Walk Includes
The Shaky Bridge + A Picnic in the Sky
Thunder at the Diel's Cauldron + Walking the Boardwalk
+ Tree
Huggers Row +
Wildlife
Galore
Distance 5 miles, time aprox 2 - 3 hours
depending
on the size of your picnic
STARTin
front of the Primary
School with
the School on your LEFT
HAND SIDE
walk on through a wide entrance towards houses and take the path that goes in front of the houses
continue to the end, cross a quiet road and you will eventually come to a bridge accross the river
at
the other side the signs will take you left
past a wooden house and into Laggan Woods
this most pleasant walk starts along the riverside with a steady climb up in to the woods
there are quite a few steps to climb but it soon levels off, after about 1 mile there is a seat on the
left
looking over the valley to the Melville Monument
continue through this ancient forest you will hear the river rushing by down below
the path eventually goes down to a gate which takes you out into open countryside
walk
on half a mile taking the left
path at the fork in the track
you are now heading to a stile onto to the river bank, walk along the path to the famous
Shaky Bridge this bridge is resting in between a double trunked tree and the bank on the
other
side of the river, this is the halfway point of the walk
Have a paddle here if you wish its great fun then cross the bridge, just beyond it
there is a bench where you can have a well earned rest
you
have a choice here, stand facing the bench and look at the hill in front
of you
the path going up goes to Melvilles Monument, or you can miss it out and take the tar road
on
your left
We are going to the Melville Monument, so from the bench make your way over to the Stile & uphill path
and climb steadily up 150 metres, taking the path on the left signed, monument, entering the forest continue
until
you reach the Monument, this is where we always have our picnic, sitting
near the edge
looking down on Comrie, usually Buzzards are soaring in this area, if you dont look down
you are higher that the trees at this point so you think you are having a Picnic in the sky
to
continue you are looking for a path just before where you arrived
at the monument
going straight down, its steep but a great adventure not as difficult as it looks
go down carefully about 150 metres till you come to gate at the tar road
cross
this single track road turn right
and lookout for the wooden steps that takes you down
to the Deil's Cauldron go right to the viewing platform and enjoy the power of the water
as it Thunders below you, look at the slot the waters cut in the rock
you
will see where the water over millions of years has worn the rock away
Retrace your steps part way back up then take the Wooden Boardwalk on the Left
onto a path after a short distance a path goes Left to the Wee Cauldron or go Straight on
there
are some Magnificent
Trees in
this area, yes we Hug
them, dont know why always have
The path from the Wee Cauldron rejoins the main path further down then continue until
you reach a road turn left taking care as you are back at the main road keep left
stay on the left hand pavement, walk about 200 metres turn left and you are back
where
you started
